A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake has shaken the southern Pacific coast of Mexico, near the border with Guatemala, sending shockwaves across the region. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers, was felt as far as El Salvador and Mexico City, where buildings creaked and shook.
This event highlights the ongoing seismic activity in the region, which is prone to earthquakes. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake was preceded by a smaller quake, a common occurrence in earthquake-prone areas. The epicenter was located 48 kilometers southwest of Aquiles Serdan, near the coast of Chiapas.
In Tapachula, the main city on Mexico's southern border, residents experienced a gradual intensification of the tremor. Alejandra Mendoza, an administrative employee, described the scene: "We were upstairs when it started shaking; we thought it would pass, but then it got stronger, so we all went downstairs and evacuated in an orderly manner to the front courtyard."
The earthquake's impact was particularly notable in Guatemala City, where the prolonged shaking frightened residents during rush hour. Many people poured into the streets, creating a chaotic scene. In contrast, the earthquake alert did not sound in Mexico City because the government stated that the energy radiated by the earthquake during the initial seconds did not exceed the activation thresholds.
Despite the tremor's intensity, authorities have not immediately reported severe damage or casualties in any country. However, the navy recommended staying away from beaches for six hours due to the risk of a tsunami. Coastal areas in the town of Suchiate, located along the river that separates Mexico from Guatemala, are being monitored for potential tsunami hazards.
