This extension will provide much-needed facilities, including a new school hall for exams and activities, a dedicated ICT teaching room, and three new science labs. The school has been operating above its admission capacity for several years, and the new extension will provide 150 additional places over the next five years, ensuring a more comfortable learning environment for students.
Ecclesfield School is also set to benefit from an expansion, with plans to accommodate 75 more pupils over the next five years. The school will receive £155,000 for a feasibility study to explore the creation of an outdoor dining area and a new classroom block. This investment aims to enhance the school's facilities and provide a more engaging learning environment.
Meadowhead School is taking a temporary approach, with plans to accommodate 90 additional pupils over the next three years. The school will utilize £1 million to convert a caretaker house into a two-storey alternative provision building, which will be completed by September 2027. This project will support the school's efforts to provide alternative provision alongside the anticipated increase in pupil numbers.
The council also highlights the rising levels of school exclusions, which are putting unsustainable pressure on the Sheffield Inclusion Centre. As part of a strategic shift, the council is focusing on strengthening in-school arrangements to prevent exclusions and promote early intervention. This approach aims to create a more supportive learning environment and reduce the need for alternative provision.
Rowan School, which specializes in providing education for primary-age children with autism and complex communication needs, is also set to benefit from refurbishment works. The school will receive £329,000 to create a flexible library and immersive room, a small one-to-one room, and a larger food tech room. These improvements will enhance the school's facilities and better support the unique needs of its students.
The authority's finance committee will discuss these plans at a meeting on Monday, indicating a continued commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Sheffield's schools.
